Each year in June, Major League Baseball hosts the First-Year Player Draft for players from the high school and collegiate levels who have zero professional experience to date. The draft brings with it intrigue and excitement each year because of the uncertainty of the picks and where the players will land. The order of the draft is determined by the previous season’s standings.
A player is eligible for the draft if he meets the following requirements:
- The player has to be a legal resident of the United States, Canada or a territory of the United States.
- The player cannot have ever signed a Major League or Minor League contract in the past.
- If the player is from the high school level, he must have graduated and not attended college yet.
- If the player attends a four-year college, he can be drafted after his junior year or after the age of 21.
- Players at junior colleges and community colleges can be drafted at any point during their academic careers.
